SARGASSUM

My wife and I have been to Sandals in Nassau several times. We love going there, but photographing something new and different was getting more difficult. The day before we arrived, a tropical storm had gone through. The seaweed was so thick you could not go in the ocean comfortably. The next day, The Sandals cleanup crew did a great job. Still some seaweed, but you could enjoy going into the water. My wife and I decided to go for an ocean swim. After the swim, we walked the beach. While walking the beach, I noticed all the different types of seaweed, shells, and other debris that had washed up on the beach.. I started collecting some of the seaweed that caught my eye. On the way back to the room, I asked an employee at the scuba station what was the name of the seaweed. He said the most of it was “Sargassum,” and that in the ocean there is a fish that looks like the seaweed; thus the name of the fish is “sargassum fish.“ Anyway, what I collected stayed in a box all night.

After breakfast, I took the box out onto the patio and started separating the contents. There were white towels on the patio chairs from the day before our swim. I placed a towel on the seats of the three chairs and put together different arrangements of what I had collected the day before. After an arrangement I liked, I photographed it. With each new arrangement photographed, I was inspired to do another (the rest of the day with no lunch). Back at home, I edited the photos by, just enhancing some, changing some to black and white, but the most fun was playing around with color slider in Elements 12, in what I call digital art..
